The symmetrically composed Quartets use an X-Y axial division of the canvas surface as their structural basis. The new, asymmetrical Quartets also use and X-Y division in one of the quadrants. However, as with all my formats, I search for a composition that will allow color to interact with vigor and clarity. The format acts as a gracious Host allowing the honored Guests, the colors, to have a ball.

"Crystals" is the title I gave to a series of paintings in which I used the illusion of translucent and transparent, geometric forms as containers to collect the mysterious and sensuous energy inherent in color and light. I became intrigued with several features unique to crystals; a solid object that allows light to pass though itself and the ability to simultaneously view the interior and exterior of its structure. The process of how crystals grew, layer by layer, also relate to my paintings technique, glazing layer upon layer of transparent paint to arrive at a deep, luminous array of colors.

The I Ching, also known as the Book of Changes, was originally an ancient Chinese collection of linear signs to be used as oracles. The geometric design elements of this Oriental system of changes and predictions are what interest me most. So in a way, what better design format for a series of non-objective paintings that might be a collection of "colored linear elements" to act as visual oracles, in "an abstract sense, they (the hexagrams) do not represent objective entities but functions." as quoted from Richard Wilhem's classic work on the Book of Changes. By appropriating the visual aspects of its system of 64 hexagrams and by integrating the "lines" with various textures and the poetry and passion of color, I look to create intriguing visual Haiku.
